The Alfred Box of Books Library Receives Grant for Literacy Initiative

Alfred, NY – The Alfred Box of Books Library recently received a grant from the Allegany County area Foundation for an early literacy initiative which will be a collaborative effort with all of the libraries within our county. This initiative will be led by the Allegany County Public Library Directors Association.

The grant money will help the libraries prepare an informational brochure on storytime or other literacy programs routinely held at each of the seventeen libraries around the county. Most of our county libraries offer a weekly storytime for infants, toddlers and/or preschool age children and their caregivers. This is an opportunity for caregivers to engage with their young children, encourage early literacy and create positive library experiences.

In addition to the information on early literacy, the libraries would create bags to provide to Jones Memorial Hospital’s maternity department and to local pediatrician’s offices that would include books, bookmarks, a toy, and library card registration information. These bags will help promote library services to families.

Melanie Miller, director of the Alfred Box of Books Library, submitted the grant application for this initiative. She stated, “Libraries have a lot to offer our county residents, and this initiative will help inform them of the available services and resources they can take advantage of.”
