David A. Howe Library Receives ACAF Grant

The Allegany County Area Foundation recently awarded a $700 grant to the David A. Howe Public Library.   Keturah Cappadonia, Library Head of Children’s Services, submitted the grant application to help with the purchase of eight chairs to place at their public computer workstations in their Adult Reading Rooms in the main area of the library.

david-a-howe-lbrary-2016The immediate beneficiaries of the new chairs will be the numerous people who use the public computers at the David A. Howe Public Library on a daily basis. In 2015, the library was visited 54,235 times by members of the public. The library’s public computer stations were used a total of 15,273 times in 2015.

The number of users of their public computer workstations has risen in the past two years and their public computers see steady traffic from the time the library opens in the morning until the library closes in the evening. Even with the popularity of smart phones and tablets, the library’s computer workstations remain popular. People use them for job seeking, filing taxes, recreational email and gaming, research, filling out and submitting forms, and printing materials.

The David A. Howe Public Library, which is the largest in Allegany County and open the most hours of any public library in the county, provides a vital service in providing free internet access and free public computer access to individuals from across Allegany County. The library is located directly on the bus routes of the Access Allegany transit line, which allows many low-income Allegany County residents to get to our library and use our services, including our computers, on a daily basis.
