The NYSUT Retiree Council #4 created the Hobart Rhinehart Memorial Scholarship Fund with the Foundation to remember their friend and longtime union activist and former president of Retiree Council #4. “Hobie” Rhinehart of Cattaraugus, NY died in 2011.

Many people will remember Hobie Rhinehart as a member and co-founder of CCSE Credit Union, a NYSUT member and past president, member of the Labor Council, and chairman of the Cattaraugus County Museum 1976 to 2011. He was also past president of the AFL-CIO and member of the Religious Coalition and several other associations. Hobie taught social studies for 28 years at Cattaraugus Central School, where he served 18 years as president of the Cattaraugus Teachers Association.

Hobie Rhinehart is survived by his wife, Audrey (Glenn) Rhinehart, whom he married on July 23, 1948, of Cattaraugus, N.Y. They had five children: Richard (Ellen) Rhinehart, Yvonne (William) Wehust, Loren Rhinehart, John (Amy) Rhinehart, and Kevin Waite. This scholarship will be available to high school seniors in Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties who will pursue a career in an education related field or in a healthcare related field of study.
