Walter F. and Louisa A. Sibley Scholarship Fund (2005)

Louisa Ackerly Sibley, 105, of 22 South St. died on Sept. 27, 2002.  She was born in Cuba on Sept. 14, 1897, she was a daughter of William Bishop and Mary McWhorter Ackerly.  In 1922 she married Walter F. Sibley, who died on July 13, 1968.  She was a lifelong resident of South Street in Cuba, NY.

Mrs. Sibley Graduated from Cuba High School in 1915 and had a year of nursing training at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City.  She later graduated from Alfred University in 1921 with a degree in applied sciences.

Mrs. Sibley was a member of  the first board of directors of Cuba Memorial Hospital and was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the hospital.  She had opened the first gift shop in Cuba Memorial Hospital and had served as a nurses’ aide.  She also served on the board and was co-manager of the former Kirkpatrick Home for childless women.  She was a charter member of the former Cuba Little Theater and a past member of the Schuyler Chap­ter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the New York State Officers Club of the DAR.  She also belonged to the Cuba Historical Society.

Her interests included counselor and crafts instructor of a private girls’ camp on Lake Erie. She taught knitting to young boys in her home during World War II. Her best interest was her professional planted perennial flower gardens for many years.
