The Ann Barwick Swift Memorial Nursing Scholarship Created for Lenoir High School

Ann Swift #2(Sept. 2016) Ellsworth Swift of Cuba, NY has recently created a scholarship endowment fund with the Allegany County Area Foundation to honor his wife, Ann Swift, who passed away in 2014. This scholarship will be available to the graduates of the Lenoir High School beginning in 2017.

The recipients of the Ann Swift Memorial Scholarship must: have a 2.5 GPA, enroll in an accredited LVN/LPN or RN Degree, and have good character, honesty, and motivation to work hard and achieve career goals in the medical field. In the spring of 2017 students may obtain an application from the Lenoir High School Guidance Department.

Ann was born June 15, 1931 in Honolulu, Hawaii and died September 17, 2014 in Cuba, NY. She was the daughter of Captain Robert Clifton Sarratt, U.S.C.G. and Ann Elizabeth Ruff Sarratt. Ann graduated in 1953 from Duke University.

Two husbands predeceased her: Paul A Barwick of La Grange, N.C. And Paul Goodman of Kinston, N.C. In 2001 she married Ellsworth Swift of Cuba, N.Y. where they resided until her death.

Ann worked for the State of North Carolina at Caswell Developmental Center in Kinston nursing handicapped patients. She loved raising orchids and was a member of the Orchid Society of Kinston. Ann and Paul Barwick owned and operated the La Grange Gazette newspaper for many years.

She was a member of and financial supporter of many conservation organizations including the Nature Conservancy, the Bat Conservation Society, Save the Manatee Society, and the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter.

Ann was a long time member of the Community Baptist church of La Grange. She was also a prolific blood and platelet donor. In retirement she enjoyed traveling to Europe and the South Pacific areas as well as within the United States.
