ACAF Grant Supports the Literacy West Summer STEAM Program

Literacy West GrantThe Allegany County Area Foundation recently presented a $424.73 check to Literacy West to support their Summer Steam program conducted over the summer. This money comes from the earnings of the Thomas F. and Laura L. Moogan Family Fund which was established at the Foundation in 1993. Each year the earnings from this fund are used for the purpose of promoting and assisting volunteer charitable and educational organizations throughout Allegany County.

The Summer STEAM program was conducted at the Belfast Central School over the summer. A total of fifteen students and six student tutors were involved in this program along with a few retirees who volunteered their time and expertise to help out. The sessions were designed to support the common core standards in math, science and language arts. A special emphasis was placed upon team projects where participants learned to work productively and effectively in groups.

The Belfast Central School students who were afforded tutoring during the summer were more prepared for the beginning of the school year.  Meredith Rutkowski, reporting on the third grade students in her class, said the retention of information for at least two of her students was very exciting.  “Their attitude about sharing math facts from grade two was very refreshing.  Clearly, the fun remediation was a huge asset to them,” Rutkowski enthused.

The program generated sufficient interest to replicate some of the segments during the 2015-16 school year.  During the Belfast after school program, volunteers over age 18 are required to obtain fingerprinting clearances and a health care physical.  If you are a senior citizen or recent retiree with a passion for science, math, languages, art or literature, please contact Jane Foster, Home to School Coordinator at Belfast Central School at 585-365-2646 ext. 2210.  She would love to provide support and training to you to work with their students in an after school program.

If you would like more information on how you can provided a legacy of hope and good will in your community, please contact the Allegany County Area Foundation at 585-808-8444.
