The Belfast Central School Receives Grant

The Belfast Central School recently received a grant check for $1,050.00 from the Allegany Endowment Fund which is managed by the Allegany County Area Foundation. This grant money will be used to support their high school newspaper, The Belfast Beacon. It will also support their literature and art magazine called, A Handful of Stars.

Patty Preston, advisor to the Belfast Central School High School Online Newspaper and Literary Magazine, explained that both of these publications enhance a culture around literacy, which in turn supports learning in all content areas. She said, “Student achievement in all areas (sports, academics, community service) is documented through The Beacon. Personal experiences are shared in essays and reinforce common humanity in a public way. Students, staff, and community members often provide positive feedback to these publications.”
