WellspringThe Allegany County Area Foundation recently awarded a $1500 grant to the Wellspring Ministries of Allegany County. The grant money will be used to help update their kitchen facilities to adequately meet the needs of their volunteers who prepare meals for the needy. They plan to purchase a commercial gas range with the grant money. The Wellspring Ministries offer a free hot meat to the needy on Wednesdays, and Fridays. They are located at 5993 County Road 16 in Belfast, NY.

In 2013 the Wellspring Ministries served 5,600 meals averaging between 45 and 65 meals each time they were open. Their biggest meal was on Thanksgiving when they served 110 people. Jim Arthur, executive director of Wellspring Ministries, said, “I am convinced more and more as I talk with our clients, the main reason many come to Wellspring is not for the giveaway items or the free meals, but rather for the unconditional acceptance they feel at Wellspring and fellowship they can have around a table sharing a meal.”

The Wellspring Ministries also accept virtually anything household related (clothes, linens, kitchen items, toys, books, decorative items, furniture, appliances, etc.) that are in good condition. These items are then made available to the needy of Allegany County free of charge.

The Allegany County Area Foundation holds assets near 8 million dollars and continues to add new funds each year. The endowed funds continue to grow in perpetuity to enrich and improve the lives of Allegany County people. This year the Foundation is set to award over $200,000 in scholarships alone.
