Allegany County Senior Foundation Receives Grant

Allegany Senior Foundation 2016The Allegany County Area Foundation recently awarded a $500 grant to the Allegany County Senior Foundation to help fund a one day outing for grandparents and their grandchildren to the Dresser Rand Challenger Learning Center located on the Saint Bonaventure Campus in Allegany New York. Their goal is to bring twenty grandparents and twenty children to the Center. One group will participate in a mission while the second group participates in hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities such as rocket building. At the conclusion of the first mission the two groups will switch so each group participates in both activities.

This experience at the Challenger Learning Center will provide an opportunity for seniors in Allegany County to spend quality time with a grandchild or surrogate grandchild at a rate that is affordable. The center, opened in 2009 and was conceived by the families of the astronauts lost in the 1986 Challenger Disaster, provides opportunities for children and adults alike to simulate the experience of manning a space mission to Mars, Rendezvous with Comet Halley, Earth Odyssey and much, much more. The activities and opportunities at the center bring the STEM skills to life for children but is an equally enjoyable experience for adults. The Center regularly runs missions for community members and private organizations as well as school groups. There are only 50 of these centers in existence and one is in our own backyard!
