WELLSVILLE,N.Y.,NOVEMBER 10, 2011—The Allegany County Area Foundation presented a grant of $1,000 to the David A. Howe Public Library in support of a series of seven musical programs in the library’s auditorium in the fall of 2011.

“The Foundation is pleased to be able to offer its sup

port of the programs at the Howe Library,” said Doug Roorbach, executive director of the ACAF, “The staff there works diligently to provide a selection of concerts and programs that so many of the people of Allegany County find interesting. It’s developing quite a reputation for the quality of its programming and the Foundation is happy to be part of that.”

Brian Hildreth, library director, noted that attendance at the library’s programs has risen steadily since its inception in 2008. In 2009 they had total attendance of 12,000, followed by 14,000 in 2010. He projects that attendance will top 17,000 in 2011.

“We try to reach out to different demographics,” he said, “We have free, good quality programs that are entertaining and educational.” He credited Eileen Tecza, director of the Nancy Howe Auditorium, with coordinating the programs.

“It’s really satisfying when you bring in artists as diverse as an African drumming group and they receive a standing ovation,” she said. Then she told of a young girl who hugged her on the way out from the Wegman’s Zoo program that was in the auditorium recently.

The library will use the grant money to pay transportation and lodging for some of the artists, as well as to pay the copyright fees on the music performed. Concert costs range from $300-600 each. The library offers the concerts free of charge and open to the public.
