The Marie Miller Gleason Scholarship Fund (2013)

David  Scholes created this scholarship in honor of his mother, Marie Miller Gleason formerly of Belfast, NY. The scholarship will benefit Belfast Central School graduating seniors.

The scholarship established in her name will assist graduates of Belfast Central, who are in the first generation of their families to attend a four year college, to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics also commonly known as STEM skills. The annual award is four hundred dollars and renewable to the recipient as long as the criteria is met.

Mrs. Gleason graduated from Belfast Central in 1938 and lives at the Green Home in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania.  Her son, David Scholes of Austin, TX, and daughter, Vicki Gleason Fox, of Wellsboro, are both Belfast alumni.

David shared that his mother has always believed in the transformative power of education–particularly for first generation college graduates–and encouraged family and friends to do all that was possible to help create that opportunity for young people. Her vision has become even more relevant in current times as vocations requiring higher education continue to expand while opportunities available to those without education beyond high school have decreased.

Mrs. Gleason and her family are grateful for the guidance and support of teachers and staff at Belfast Central and are pleased to have the opportunity to assist future graduates.

The first scholarship was awarded in June of 2014. Others may donate to the fund in honor of Marie Miller Gleason using the website or by contacting the Gleason Scholarshipdirector@alleganycountyareafoundation.org or phone 585.808-8444.
